Avengers 2: Age of Ultron – SDCC Teaser Trailer Hints At Avengers 3

Marvel Panel Avengers

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: our first teaser trailer for Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. Now no one has leaked or made the trailer available on line as of yet; but I’m not going to wait around for that since we have a stunning play by play thanks to our SDCC reporter Abigail Hapil. So let’s get to the scene first and then break down one of the most shocking moments of the film.

The trailer opens with all of the Avengers partying in Stark Towers, which is now Avengers Towers, and Thor drops his hammer and challenges the Avengers to pick it up. Obviously everyone tries their hand at it – Tony and Rhodey with their Ironman hands; non-Hulked-out Bruce Banner, etc – but no one is able to budge it until Captain America tries. Then a horrible buzzing noise takes over the scene as a ragged old Ironman suit stumbles in on its own. It’s Ultron and he and his Iron Legion proceed to declare war on the Avengers.

What follows is a bunch of action sequences spliced together: the Avengers fighting the Iron Legion, a very enraged Hulk faces off against the Hulk Buster suit, Thor fighting Hydra tanks, etc. Finally, Ultron turns towards the camera and says: “I have no strings”

The title then appears on screen; and is then followed – as all Marvel movies are – by a post credit sequence. In it we see Tony in a broken Ironman suit, Thor’s hand weakly trying to get to his hammer, Captain America’s shield lying shattered on the groun and Ultron – possibly – standing on top of a pile of bodies.

. . . . WOW. Let that all sink in for a moment. Again, once the teaser trailer gets released officially we can dive deeper into some of these moments more fully. Also, this is a quick ‘remembrance’ of what happened, so there’s sure to be a few more scenes as well as possible variation of lines.

That being said, there is one part of this trailer that we can address right now; and might even set up for Avengers 3. The final moments of the trailer make is seem as though the Avengers have been defeated and there is no one left to help. Most shocking of all, Captain America’s shield is shattered! The indestructible virbranium shield has been completely shattered. HOW? Well this post trailer scene can mean one of several things.

  • Dream Sequence

This could all be one big dream sequence. A nightmare of Tony Starks of what he’s responsible for and what could happen.

  • Black Panther Easter Egg

If this is real, then we must account for how Captain America’s shield has been shattered. Perhaps this has something to do with Vision’s ability to change his own density; though that wouldn’t necessarily effect the shield’s density. The alternative is that Ultron has somehow found a way to match the Shield’s virbranium material; and there is only one place to get Virbranium: Wakanda – the home country of the Black Panther. Whether it’s destroyed by contact with more vibranium or needs to be replaced, this looks like an excellent sign for Black Panther to make an entrance in an upcoming Phase 3 film.

Avengers 3 Set Up:

One thing that has been left out of the Avengers 2:Age of Ultron trailer talk is what happened immediately afterward. Robert Downey Jr referenced the famous ‘I have an army, we have a Hulk’ speech from The Avengers; but this time he ended with “We have a Thanos”. This was the moment Josh Brolin walked on stage wearing the Infinity Gauntlet.

This could all but confirm that Thanos will be in Avengers 2: Age of Ultron; and maybe he saves the day. Maybe Ultron is too much for the Avengers. Maybe it all falls on Tony to Avenge them. And maybe he gets a deal from Thanos to turn it all around. If Ultron truly does lay waste to everything on Earth, an all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet could be the way to set things right. Obviously, the repercussion of all of this would lead directly into Phase 3 and Avengers 3.
