Analysis Of Avengers: Age Of Ultron TV Spot #2 – Humor, Hawkeye’s Apprentices & More

There’s just about a month and a half until Avengers: Age Of Ultron hits theaters; and Marvel has released a new TV Spot. Now I’m sure most of you might be wondering what’s so special about this new TV Spot that we didn’t get from the other full-length trailers. Well besides the ton of new footage and Avengers rooster set up, we actually have humor! So enough set up! Watch the short TV Spot below and I’ll meet you afterwards for the analysis.

A Break From The Dark Tone:

Since the first Avengers trailer aired, everything about this film has seemed dark, dark, dark. Between the Avengers fighting each other and a sociopathic robot on the warpath, there wasn’t much of the usual light and fun tone we’ve become accustomed to in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thankfully, this TV Spot gave us just that.

From little quips from Tony Stark to Captain America throwing a motorcycle and saying ‘opps it slipped’, this is the tone we’ve come to love about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though beyond this lighter tone, this TV Spot also gave us some other important tidbits of information.

Upgraded Arsenals:

One quick thing of note in this trailer is a closer look at some of the new enhancements the Avengers have now that Tony Stark is funding them. As we saw in the last trailer, Hawkeye has extendable arrows – and a lot of them – so he can carry more. Additionally, Captain America’s left arm now sports magnetic clasps that attract his shield making for faster retrieval time.

Civil War Starts Early:

Despite being a funny scene, Tony’s quips about Captain America being the leader of the group despite everything Tony has done does show us that they’ll be quite a few moments these heroes will but heads in the film. These small disagreements are sure to grow once Ultron puts pressure on them. This is especially true when we consider the Tony vs Steve Argument scene we saw a little while back.

“Actually he’s the boss. I just pay for everything, and design everything. Make everyone look cooler”

Though personally, I hope this tiny argument about ‘who’s leader’ is actually more innocent and stems from Captain America saying “Avengers Assemble” when Tony actually wanted to say it. As faithful readers will know, this has been something I’ve been hoping for since last June. Though I’d love for it to play out a little more like this:

Steve Rogers: “Technically I was first, so I think I should say it.”
Tony Stark: “Um excuse me, did you pay for any of this? I get to say it.”
Steve Rogers: “We’ll say it together.”
Tony Stark: “Fine. Avengers Assemble!!!!!!”
Steve Rogers: “ . . . You’re a jerk.”

^Oh well, I can dream can’t I?

Hawkeye As Mentor – Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver:

If you saw The Avengers, then there is one thing you know for certain – Hawkeye kind of got the short end of the stick. He was brainwashed for about 3/4ths of the film and didn’t get many lines. So when Avengers: Age Of Ultron came around, he had to get some more love; and it looks like that is exactly what’s happening here.

Quicksilver speaks! Love the accent; and no, I did not see that coming!

Quicksilver speaks! Love the accent; and no, I did not see that coming!

Beyond talk that we’ll learn where he was during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, this film will also show Hawkeye in a mentoring role towards the Maximoff Twins. Now it’s unclear how he is exactly chosen for this job – whether it just happens or if he has some sort of connection with them – but judging from Hawkeye’s comic past, it could make a lot of sense. Hawkeye used to be a part of the Circus of Crime, so if this history stays in the films then that could explain why he’s the point person for teaching these misguided youths how to fight for the side of good.

“If you step outside that door, you’re an Avenger” – Hawkeye

We see Hawkeye saying the above words to Scarlet Witch during the film – probably towards the end. Now there seems to be a lot of rumors about Quicksilver possibly dying; but I doubt they’d kill this new Avenger so quickly. Though whatever happens, Hawkeye is absolutely prepping Scarlet Witch for the upcoming fight and letting her know that if she stands with them, they’ll all stand together, as Avengers.

Alternate Version – Hulkbuster Suit Up:

There’s also an alternate version of this TV Spot which is about 90% the same as this one. The only real difference is that Ultron also gets a ‘name slot’ and the moment when Tony Stark says he ‘designed everything’, we also get a shot of Ironman flying with the Hulkbuster armor pieces flying behind him. Considering how large the other Hulkbuster pieces are, the whole scene looks a little Power Rangers Megazord-ish; but I am certainly not complaining!

All in all this is shaping up to be the Avengers film we’ve been waiting for. We had the high stakes and now we have the humor to balance it out. So stay tuned here for more updates as well as the Spoiler Free Reviews, Top Easter Eggs, and more once the film hits theaters May 2nd.
